Karen Hunt's other published works, etc.

As quite a few of my subscribers have asked, here at last is a record of many of my other published works. I will add more as time goes on. Perhaps I will read chapters of Luminaria and the sequel that I’m working on—but where to find the time is the challenge. We shall see…

There are other things here besides my books, such as a documentary film about InsideOUT Writers and one girl in particular that I’ve talked about in my essays, Silvia Sanchez. There are also some articles that I’ve written.

Warning: My children’s books are all about innocence and beauty, as they should be for young children. My other writing can be quite brutal so don’t say I didn’t warn you...

Documentary Film

Gangsta Girls, 1996 (I think) A&E

Silvia was a 17-year-old girl in my first writing class in Central Juvenile Hall. She was facing a life sentence for a murder committed by her older, abusive boyfriend when she was 16. Silvia was sentenced to 25 years to life on her 18th birthday.

The film documents her writing journey in my class that helped to free her from the abusive hold her boyfriend had over her. Silvia and I remained friends throughout her years in prison. She was released on the day Donald Trump became president.

The SFV Interviews: Jackie, by Karen Hunt, 2018, NAILED Magazine
Growing Up a Girl in the Nightmare of American Suburbia.

Jackie.jpg

Jackie: I have lived in a trailer park, suburban home, mansion, have slept on a couch, made my bed next to a washer and dryer in a garage, and slept in a small attic above a furnace that was so tiny I couldn’t stand up in it. My family was also overtly racist. In the trailer park, my bedroom curtain faced the street and my mother hung a giant confederate flag which read, “The South Will Rise Again.” One of her boyfriends had swastikas branded on his chest and my mother’s wedding ring depicted a swastika as well.

Kashmir: I gained power by continuing to be me, no matter what. After I survived my first rape, my very close friend asked, “Aren’t you going to wear baggy clothes now and take searing showers and stuff?” I flatly told her, no. I said I am going to dress how I want and drink what I want and go where I want because that is what I would have done before. He raped my body, he can’t have my soul.

I gained power by talking about it. The more I talked about it, the more my friends stepped forward and admitted they had also been raped and/ or sexually assaulted.

Death of a Juggalette in the San Fernando Valley

No photo description available.

Lena’s mother, Wanda, has a question that haunts her: Who gave Lena her last dose of drugs? Whoever it was, they had something to do with that Juggalo traphouse, Wanda is sure of it.

The traphouse Wanda’s talking about looks normal enough. Just another middle class, two-storied house on a quiet street at the north end of the San Fernando Valley, or the SFV—birthplace of the porn film industry and the Kardashians’ horrible reality show. Just down the street from this house horses graze in an open field. Rock formations of Stoney Point Park rise above the field. Peaceful. Idyllic.

But walk inside and enter a world as dark and perverse as a Stephen King novel. Open the basement door and fall into Dante’s 10th Circle of Hell.

Tales of Eclipse: the Lost (Foreign) Women of Luxor, 2022, Egyptian Streets

Eva and I had been stranded in Luxor, Egypt, during the COVID-19 pandemic. As luck would have it, we had finally found flights out on the same day. Now, it looked likely that Eva wouldn’t be getting on that plane.

The taxi was surrounded by an angry mob of men. One man, the lawyer who had promised to help Eva settle a dispute with her Egyptian ex-husband, was screaming obscenities through the window nearest to where she sat. On the other side, the man who had introduced Eva to the lawyer, had climbed into the backseat and was also screaming obscenities while trying to pull her out of the car. Meanwhile, the horde of men were adding to the melee by banging on the car and screaming, too. Amongst them, I could see Eva’s neighbor, Ahmed, to whom she had sold her villa.

The selling of her villa and expecting to actually be paid for it, was how the problems had all started.

And that’s all for now. I will add more as time goes on.
