As a child, I walked through Dachau. I met survivors and listened to their stories. That’s why it's so important for me to share what I remember so the lies spread today don't overcome the truth.
Many years ago now, while living in Holland, I watched Claude Lanzmann's landmark documentary on the holocaust, Shoah, and I'm still haunted by some of the first-hand testimonies he captured. That it was broadcast in the United States by PBS over four nights in 1987, would PBS have the guts to show it again today? What we see happening across college campuses tells us how dangerous it is to allow this evil chapter in history to be washed away.
While working in a nursing home after high school, I helped care for a tiny lady with numbers tattooed on her arm. She had been at Dacchau as a young girl. She was no longer able to speak due to a stroke but she smiled often and her eyes sparkled. I always wondered how anyone who had lived through Dacchau could have ever smiled again. I still think of her often even after all these years. Thank you for this beautifully written account. It honestly brought tears to my eyes.

An' first--a happy Pesach to you! The tradition is to invite friends an' all who are hungry--neighbors, friends--not just "chews!" to share the meal an' the stories. You'd be an honored guest at our table! An' the tale told is a story of survival under circumstances not unlike our own today--as humans!--for we all now are fightin' against slavery under many (many!) tyrants...
Regardin' these survivors--so many did I meet an' know growin' up--but so few people today have ever met one, heard one, or lost (as we did) fambly to the Holocaust. (Outside'a the big cities--like where our transplanted NewYawk fambly is now (talk 'bout city fish outta water!)--there are folks that never met a "chew" so it surprises me not at all that it's easy ta deny something or believe the worst 'bout folks ya never met!) This pop-u-lar denial stuff (along with the Hitler-wuz-right cheers) worries & PAINS ME no end! (I joke about my trigger big toe hurtin' when it rains but lordy when this stuff rains down it hurts even harder!)
When I hear folks call it the "Holohoax" an' say it wuz all hype and didn't happen I'm just 'bout gobsmacked but then I remember how STRONG the media has gotten, everyone online, one voice--easy ta "steer cattle" (even givin' 'em a bum steer!).
Eisenhower said (this from a much longer letter):
"The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda.' ”
(note: some have shortened this to a "get it all on record" quote but to my knowledge this one above, in writing, is the real deal. )
Patton had already, as we see, lost his taste fer observin' the truth. He unhelpfully said something to the effect that "we" took the wrong side in the war--seein' the admittedly foul an' degraded state of the Jews--talk 'bout blamin' the victims! -- literally rendered inta bein' "filthy jews" -- I think he used the word disgusting. Some today, like Patton, cannot understand this state wuz not by choice but due ta bein' in the less-than-sanitary conditions, without water, soap, nutrition... etc. Not unlike the pogroms as well--cut off from the water source an' forced ta use dirty wells. My granny made it a pernt to always look impeccable, not a hair outta place, as did her mom an' her mom's mom an' so on--they wore white gloves out, always makeup, a hat, etc. all that---to avoid bein' called "filthy jews" an' it took me until NOW to understand whut she meant--why she decried my blue jeans an' grousin' at wearin' a dress out... b/c today, a lotta folks think Patton wuz right an' wanna mis-remember whut Ike warned....)

When I wuz a small fry I took classes -- swim, art, drama--at our local Jewish Center (they were cheap an' quite good!). This wuz back in "ancient times"--the 1970's! an' I remember all the tattoo'd arms I'd see, specially among the older folks that volunteered there. There were the kind oldsters cookin' food, an' servin' an' doin' the cashier thing at the cafeteria that'd give me "a leetle extra" or a piece of taffy because these elders loved all the "kinder." I 'member even younger folks at our temple that had the tattoos too--an' from a young age bein' ssshhed if I wanted ta mention it ta my ma or gran'parents. They knew but it was to be "understood"... Some readers may not know that tattoos are crime against (orthodox) jewish law--obviously NOT those forced on folks--but a tattoo is considered a defacing mark or even a form of idolatry so strong the tattoo'd aren't supposed ta be buried in a chewish cemetery... so the Nazis doin' this was not only defacement but a crime against the faith...
Anywhoo... you always speak up fer women Karen, so I think ya might be moved by this interview by Ilana Rachel Daniel with a brave Iranian woman--now a professor--who escaped Iran at age 15 (after bein' arrested fer wearin' her hijab "improperly" at age 14 even though no skin showed at all!)--an' who talks about Iranian women being supportive of Israel an' (tho' the press won't say it) miserable under the current zealot regime... It's a GREAT interview!
Last but not least, I wanna share a link to a movie made by an ol' friend. I just learned she sadly passed away this week. It's about the last set've twins that Dr. Mengele "experimented on" that survived... an' managed to keep their Jewish faith and "forgive" the crimes of Mengele... I'm gonna watch it this week myself--it won many awards:
Meantimes, I love this story ya tell about the warmth an' kindness of Mother Basilea Schlink--an' her seein' yer artistic talents as a blessin' so many years ahead of time! One of the dear friends of our own fambly when I wuz growin' up was a wonderful painter--she wuz hidden by a Catholic fambly in Germany at age 9--her blonde hair an' blue eyes an' perfect German helped--but that fambly still took a mortal risk "adopting" her, a young jewish girl, an' hiding her 'til after the war. Helen's parents died in the camp--I wonder how painful it felt for them to "give up" their daughter to neighbors, knowin' their own fate... so I'm heartfelt-grateful to the Christian famblies that took those risks--that saved our "dear Helen" -- like the good "Sisters" of Mother Schlink's church.

A heart breaking tale that must be told and always remembered. Alice Miller was speaking of the cultural denial that was starting to take place decades ago in Germany. As it is with an individual so it is with human society, it is always better to bring to light and work through something than to deny it ever happened and be doomed to repeat. I’m glad you brought up the nuns and the opposite side of human nature from the brutal, murderous side. I needed that reminder today, that there really are good, caring people to contrast the horrors of human nature.
Today a friend sent me an old BBC video about the 10 million German men, women and children that were tortured and murdered in 1945 in retaliation. I’ll post it at the end if you want to see it. It made me question humanity as a whole. That nobody learned from the horrors of what happened and just perpetuated the horror under a different banner.
Like the Jews, and the others that are never mentioned who died alongside the Jews, they died horrific deaths and suffered horrific torture.
I think your story really does contrast Heaven and Hell right here on earth and how horrific or beautiful human nature can be.
I also think that there are some people that happen to be Jewish (ie: George Soros who betrayed fellow Jews for the Nazis without remorse to this day) and that these people can give Jews a bad name, yet they are not representative of the Jewish people nor do they have any concept of God They should be thought of the same as any other evil person of any ethnicity or religion.
It is so disheartening that people will persecute an entire race for the crimes of a few. I think that might be why what you see is happening, I can’t be sure, but perhaps?

A visit to Dachau is an experience difficult to place into words. The visitors' center had a huge map of Europe showing the network / web 🕸️ of all the national socialist workers' party camps. The Big camps were used as hubs for satellite facilities. The Horror that the Dachau facility outside Munich was an SS training facility, a 'school' in mass murder, using forced labor and experimental physiology as stepping stones on the 'way' towards their hideous ideological solution.

I believe that the US 45th Infantry were a part of the Allied Forces liberating the camps in the south, 1945. Their museum is in Oklahoma City, USA~ Witnesses.

18 years ago, my then 13-yo daughter was critically ill and spent 63 days in the ICU. At a follow-up appointment with the neuro-opthamologist to determine how the illness impacted her vision, I was asked by a woman in the waiting room about my daughter's situation, which included medical trauma. This incredible woman, Jaffa Munk, came and put her hand on my daughter's arm and said "Molly, I was in the concentration camps, I lost my father, my mother, my whole family. They took everything, but they couldn't take my spirit. Whatever they do, whatever happens, they can't take your spirit, always remember that."
That profound message had a huge impact on my daughter and me, too, and definitely helped my daughter maintain perspective about her situation.
I am equally moved by the stories of the holocaust and could never understand what went through the minds of all those who participated, or looked away.....I think it runs deeper than" they thought they were doing the right thing..." there is a willful blindness and a kind of madness , that besets the phsyche of a nation, fuelled by propaganda and lies....as a christian , I believe , we should " do unto others as we would have done unto us ".....given all the wars and murder of innocents in todays world , I think what we lack in humanity is that kind of empathy that Jesus taught us.....🙏

The way out of this mess:
1. Create an easy system for real money: private currencies/warrants based on real assets, goods, services, etc. (gold, corn, oil, distance/volume/weight transportation, labor human hour/minute, etc.)
2. Ban legal tender. Let the free markets decide which real-currencies/valuables/warrants they prefer to trade with
3. Ban paper-backed currencies (unlike real-backed ones of point 1.)
4. Enforce a Legal Banking Reserve of 100% of deposits (so banks don't create money based on air) and therefore there's no excuse for a Central Bank, because there would be no risk of bank-runs since all their loans are fully backed with deposits
