I don't know how I ended up reading your story, it touches me deeply I grew up in that strange country you visited, I was a kid in Bucharest when the Revolution happened. It's always amazing to see how outside people saw that reality ! Here in North America we are far from that, still we took a slippery road towards something similar, not many can see it. It's always important to stand up for our rights and freedom, and maybe now its more important than ever !

A great and terrifying adventure you had in Romania in those days Karen, and so appropriate to share with us at this moment of history. If god did smile upon your family back then, he did not do it yesterday for the truckers. I am not hopeful at all that there can be a peaceful solution to the present crisis.
Absolutely God kept the guards from seeing that suitcase, just as He hid my grandmother from the Nazis and their dogs as she came home from Bible study after curfew in France during the war. I agree that each person should be allowed their own beliefs as I do not want someone else’s religion imposed on me. Isn’t that part of what this country was founded on?

An interesting point came up recently while revisiting the video of Ceaușescu‘s execution: it was mentioned that the video was faked. That the actual execution had occurred prior by a soldier who shot Ceaușescu and his wife in the head. If you watch the video that Taibbi posted in his article all the way to the end, you see them (I’m assuming actors?) get up.
Great read. I enjoy social commentary spiced up with personal flavor. I try to do the same in my writing and I greatly appreciate it in yours. It makes me relate to your macro observation through your micro experience.
“Since when has there ever been such a united group of tyrants worldwide, all saying the same thing in perfect unison?”
My answer is as follows:
They move in lockstep bc they are at war with their own citizens. That is why they do not stop whenever their strategies are proven false. They just lie and move on. Politicians have always lied but left room at least for Plausible deniability. These just lie and walk away knowing that they either won’t be questioned or won’t answer when & if they are.
Imagine being in actual war. Shooting at the enemy and them shooting at you. Next, someone on your side inadvertently blows up a school building with some students inside. Do you stop fighting? No. You are at war. You wish it wouldn’t have happened but it did and now you focus on the task at hand. You tell yourself that you will check later if you are fortunate to be on the winning side.
That is what the west has become. Installed leaders carrying out agendas from Davos or sum-such other place. They really just let our family members die alone? They really censored & suppressed treatments? They really just let Americans lose their businesses? They really instituted illegal mandates against citizens to take a vaccine that was/is non sterilizing and not adequately tested? They sold it with slogans like safe & effective but provided zero detail? They really changed the rules of elections by illegal means to achieve their desired results?

they fear our faith, demeaning us, actively seeking to relinquish/strip us of our most powerful weapons: Barry Obama, ‘... clinging to their guns & bibles.’
