I work in the AI field. It's nothing to do with what these tyrants are up to. I can tell you that all of the known "AI" (a generic meaningless word), is heavily flawed. There could be some superior secreted AI, but I'm doubtful. Just like the great Oz, these hucksters need to keep selling the illusions of grandeur to keep the little people following their fantasies and feeding the beast. What's worse than giving oneself over to a superior thing is giving oneself over to an inferior thing in the belief that it is superior and/or omnipotent. That's what these con men are doing to people. If the claims made by masayoshi son about his surrender to the deity ChatGPT are true, it shows that money doesn't wash away one's foolishness and ignorance and anyone that lacks true discernment can be sucked in.
Karen you are so right about distancing from all of these tech mediums and media. I'm deep into it yet I have simple hobbies that are non-tech. I barely use a mobile phone for anything beyond calls and minimal texting and I don't use known spy apps. Most people, lack even that much self control and there are people more austere than me. Your book idea is a good one but getting grandchildren to have an interest will be a massive challenge for most.

I just wrote a note about how insane it is to believe AI can outperform humanity after watching a concert by the Berlin Philharmonics for New Year’s Eve. The talent, the energy… amazing. Humanity has a direct connection to the divine, to creation and it can thus create in magnificent ways. AI does not. In September, a dear Jewish friend gifted us as a family a beautiful leather-bound Chumash. We’ve been reading from the start, just a few verses at a time, usually with a hot chocolate before bed. My 13yo Daughter chose some beautiful books for us and those beloved friends for Christmas (I know, but we give them gifts anyway 😊) - The Iliad for me, Huckleberry Finn and Oliver Twist.
I love books; I just need to make more time to just sit and read. We ditched our tv in favour of a planted aquarium a year or so ago and that’s so much nicer. I was quietly impressed at Arya’s choices. My friend is from Nebraska and Huckleberry is one of his faves.
The Chumash is one of the most beautiful gifts I’ve been given. I’m not Jewish but it’s wonderful to read from another perspective and a thoughtful gift.

Time is a problem for adults. It's never the same as the endless Saturdays of childhood when I could lie on my bed and read without a care in the world. Childhood is the time to read (although one should never stop) and it's sad that most children no longer experience this.

As for large language models, sophisticated pattern guessers, on the way towards more sophisticated machine capabilities: if the military needs to make or buy “AI” to remain viable on future battlefield “surfaces” - and I think they do else we become at risk to those who do - then the best means is to buy it from among the best American purveyors of that tech, which are likely the big boys, and possibly some small outfits. The government shouldn’t try to do it on its own as they can’t do as good a job. The thing I would hope for is that the government doesn’t do “single source” thereby getting stuck with one company and one technology flavor that may be flawed.
Ethical boundaries need to be established around that tech and international agreements, but that won’t stop rogue states (or the US which needs to be prepared against rogue states - so it’s a “should” that is fraught with hypocrisy).
I’ll add that in military history a weapon was created that was so deadly it was said that all wars would end to avoid the gruesome destruction. That weapon was the crossbow.
Yes, I love the story of the crossbow. But the thing is we really can now, literally, destroy all kf humanity and the planet. I mean, the planet will survive and maybe even some humans would survive. Oh we do have a home theatre but we use it maybe once a week nowadays. The tv in the family room was barely ever used.
