Break Free with Karen Hunt averages 50,000 views per month
“A word after a word after a word is power.” — Margaret Atwood
You can listen to me read this essay here:
I rarely ever do this, but I thought it was time to share the good news about how Break Free with Karen Hunt is doing!
First, I want to take a moment to thank all my readers and listeners for joining me on this writing journey. Truly, Substack is one of the last bastions of free speech (if not the last) and I feel an urgent calling to keep writing as long as possible because you never know when we could all be shut down.
One-time or recurring donations can also be made at Ko-Fi
I am super excited to announce that:
Break Free with Karen Hunt averages 50,000 views per month.
As a writer who fought against cancelation and was told nonstop over the years, even in life-threatening terms, to just “shut up”, this is truly miraculous. In fact, there are no words adequate to express how much this means after the harsh treatment I received for so long. I am still cancelled, banned and shadow-banned, but that is par for the course.
Writers can’t whine and make excuses. You just have to do it. No matter how you feel. Like Jack London said:
“You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.”
Friedrich Nietzsche’s words take on new meaning for us now: “All I need is a sheet of paper and something to write with, and then I can turn the world upside down.”
Pieces of paper did all of that so imagine what AI is doing, turning the world upside down with words inside our heads, terrible words drowning out the truth and making us forget who we are, and we must fight back with all the strength we have.
I couldn’t afford to keep writing without my subscribers, so I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I keep the paid subscription to a minimum, $5 a month or $50 for the year. What’s most important is that people read my work, which is why I do not have a paywall. It’s already hard enough to break free of the boxes we are being forced into. Paywalls are one more layer ensuring that no one outside of your box will ever hear what you have to say.
So, please remember to share Break Free with Karen Hunt.
This has become a full-time job, but it isn’t my only job. I often get up at 4 am, go to sleep at 2 am so I can write these essays, then have a full day of work on top of that. Thankfully, God has blessed me with a lot of energy.
Besides, what’s the big deal. As Ernest Hemingway said:
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Quite a few of my subscribers have asked if I could add a section about my other published writing. To that end, I am working on “Karen Hunt’s published works” and within the next few days, I will be putting it up. My greatest hope is that one day the best of my essays will be published as a book, and I can add it there!
Madeleine L’Engle said:
“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
In what now feels like another life, I wrote and/or illustrated nineteen children’s books, many of them with Harvest House Publishers.
More recently, I’ve had published three out my five-book Young Adult Fantasy series, Night Angels Chronicles, and, shortly before the start of Covid, a science fiction novel, Luminaria.
My plan was to finish the fourth book in Night Angels Chronicles and a sequel to Luminaria, but then I started writing these essays…. Oh dear! But it’s still my plan to finish them—I know, I keep saying that!
So much of my fiction has proved to be prophetic. It kind of freaks me out to reread it now.
I agree with Loyd Alexander (whose books I love), who said:
“Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it.”
My books were written before words like “woke” and “anti-vaxxer” and “misinformation” became the dominate ways that we were told we needed to look at the world and each other. Luminaria foretells of how surveillance has become an everyday part of our lives and how we are coming to accept being overtaken by machines.
I especially want to finish the sequel to Luminaria as I am eager to add the knowledge I have gained since Covid, not to mention how my spiritual awakening now influences my writing. You can find out more about that in my essay The Truth about LUCIFERASE.
That’s all for now. I must get back to finishing up “Get Ready for the Next Pandemic”!
As I write, I keep Anne Frank’s words in mind:
“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.”
God bless you all!
Well deserved!
Karen has been getting up at 2am/3am on and off for over a year now (due to time zone differences) to appear as a guest on my radio show. That’s with no coercion at all on my part. And she’s always full of energy and enthusiasm and has a huge smile on her face, even at that hour of the morning. Every time. Respect!
