Years ago, when I first read Barbara Ehrenreich’s “ Nickel & Dimed “, and then “ Bright-Sided”, I recognized, and admired, that here was someone who could express and articulate thoughts very similarbto my own, but far better than I. Karen, you are another.
You took my mind off the tragedies that keep exploding on my screen.
I lived through Hurricane Katrina in a rural area north of Covington. For over a month we didn’t have cell phones, or TV or electricity (except for a generator). I loved it and consider it my best time in Louisiana. All the neighbors united to help each other. Neighbors came to visit and stayed sometimes sitting around a fire. Nights were dark with the sounds of the frogs and birds chirping with a calming effect. One neighbor made breakfast for everyone at 6am. It was a time when the men sat together drinking coffee and discussing the issues at hand. No screen No msm It was glorious.
Nice. Your news letters are always long and it takes me a long time to read them between all of the other things I do. I love reading carefully. You really do have a gift of knowledge and sense.

I am taking care of my 99 yo daddy and also managing the big old house with hubbs and two kitties.
My dad has decided to share his story of our family. He has traced both his and mom family back to the late 1600s. I have been scanning the photos and he has been writing his story. He has diaries since he was a teenager. He had earlier ones but they were "destroyed" used as toilet paper without my father's knowledge. He just enjoyed writing everything down. His diaries are such a joy to read. They are all in dutch so I have to read slowly at times.
I love the things he wrote about before he was married and after he married mom and how happy they were. He was a POW in northern Germany and when he came home after the war (he walked home) he wrote everything down and maps too.
Okay, So I am enjoying all of his stories right now.

People of that time didn’t have much materially, but as GIG said, it mattered what a man was (spiritually). They were hardy, brave, and had a conscience.
